How?
Chemical reactions occur when two chemicals, that have different properties, mix and create a new substance. Rust is one of these. Salt water and iron mixed and produce iron oxide (aka rust). Rust has different physical and chemical differences. Some chemicals are broken and give off energy. This is combustion.
Matter is always conserved. You cannot destroy or create matter during a chemical reaction. This is called the Law of Conservation of Mass.
Magnesium can mix with light and create magnesium oxide. It is way different than either of its components. Sometimes it is easier to know what chemical reactions are if you do one yourself. Sometimes compounds split away from smaller elements/compounds. Another way is elements/compounds mix to make new compounds. This type of reaction is called a combination reaction. Matter mix together to make new things. When you heat iron and sulfur they create iron sulfide. Sometimes the mixture is not magnetic, but sometimes it will react to a magnet. Still, most of the time it does not respond because sulfur is a nonmagnetic chemical.
Chemistry affects the world because chemical reactions have helped made other discoveries in the world. One of these was one of the first cars to run on gasoline, made by Karl Benz. Whether you walk, ride a bus, use a bike, or by car, it was because of chemists that you can. They created natural rubber. Untreated rubber would melt in the heat. It would also crack become brittle in the cold. Chemists found that by heating it and adding sulfur, they got a durable type of rubber.
